Sometimes the importance of a proper bike fit, whether done in person or with an expert online bike fit is brushed over by some. Usually, this is just down to inexperience but even someone who cycles casually can enjoy the benefits a bike fit brings. When your bike does not fit you well it can lead to more aches and pains, riding more inefficiently and more discomfort making you choose to ride less.
Considerations for a basic fit
Here we look at what goes into a basic fit assessment, but keep in mind that more intricate ones happen when it is for a more serious rider.
● Think about how you ride now - You might want to rise a certain way but your bike fit should be about how you ride now. What are your flexibility, strength and endurance like now?
● Check the size of the frame - No matter what changes you might make or that might happen with a virtual bike fit, if the frame size is wrong there are going to be problems.
● Make the easy and obvious adjustments - The seat angle, front and back seat position, and height can all be changed to improve things.
● Consider what needs to be changed - If something cannot be adjusted can it be changed or swapped? For example, to get the handlebars into a better position for you, you could get a new stem.
There are different types of bikes
Since there are different types of bikes it is important that any fitting or online bike fit sessions are based on the right type as they are sized differently.
1. Road bikes - Can come in numerical sizes as well as standard sizing ie Small, Medium and Large. Different brands are sized differently so one bike fit for one maker is not the same for another.
2. Mountain bikes - Just come in the standard sizing and are more similar across brands than road bikes but there can still be some small differences.
3. Hybrid bikes - As suggested with the name these are a mix of the two types and are easier in size than road bikes but not as flexible as mountain bikes.
Bike fits for women and children
Bike fitting for adult men is different to fitting for an adult woman, and a virtual bike fit is again different for a child. Women are narrower in the shoulders for example and have longer legs than their torsos. It is important that women have bikes that meet their needs for the best comfort and performance. Women bikes tend to have a more compact frame and narrower handlebars for example. While some women are find with men bikes, some find women specific options better. It can be tempting to buy a bike for a child that they will grow into because of cost and how quick they grow but they need to be comfortable too. They will ride more confidently and capably with a bike that fits them properly. Check things like the standover height, the seat height and such.
